Three decade of Spanish-English Contrastive Rhetoric. A powerful implement in order to improve written discursive competence of SLE students

En este artículo analizaremos los orígenes de la Retórica Contrastiva, en el que confluyen un cambio de perspectiva lingüística –la unidad de análisis pasa de la oración al texto-; el supuesto whorfiano del relativismo lingüístico y la insuficiencia de los modelos de la época para mejorar las producciones escritas de los estudiantes que desemboca en la formulación de la hipótesis inicial de la RC. A continuación, examinaremos las reacciones que provocó en diferentes autores tanto en sus detractores como en sus defensores. Posteriormente, expondremos la evolución de la disciplina desde sus estadios iniciales, para, finalmente, realizar una valoración de la última versión conocida hasta el momento.

In this article, we will analyze the origins of Contrastive Rhetoric, in which a linguistic perspective change –from sentence analysis to text analysis-; Whorf’s linguistic relativism hypothesis and the inadequacy of the methods in that time to improve the written productions of students gather. Next on, we will examine the reactions that triggered in different scholars both its detractors and its defendants. Later, we will expose the evolution of the discipline from its initial stages in order to carry out, finally, an assessment of the last known version.
